The person who played 8 ♣ must take the trick, because it is the highest ranking card of the lead card's suit. The last person to play a card didn't have any clubs, so they dumped their diamond Ace on the trick. This is only true for the first trick! If you cannot follow suit after the first trick has been played, then you can play any card from your hand that you want.įor example, suppose the first trick played out like this: 2 ♣, 4 ♣, 8 ♣, 1 ♦. They are allowed to play a diamond card, or a spades card, as long as it is not the Queen of Spades. That means they cannot play the Queen of Spades, nor can they play a hearts card on the first trick (unless they have no choice at all because they don't hold any non-point cards in their hand - that would be most unusual!). But what if the second player does not have a club card? Then they can play any card that is not a point card. Rule 1: No Point Cards on the First TrickĪbove, I said that each player must "follow suit" on the first trick by playing a club card. You cannot lead with a point card until hearts are broken, as discussed in a following section. The person who takes the trick leads the next trick by placing any card from their hand, except a point card, in the middle. For example, if the cards were played like this: 2 ♣, A ♣, 10 ♣, 5 ♣, then the person who played the Ace - A ♣ - will take the trick, because the Ace is the highest ranking card. The person who played the highest-ranking card of the suit that was led (clubs, in this case) takes the four cards. ![]() ![]() This sequence of 4 cards being played is called a "trick". Then the next person to the left follows suit, and finally the last person does. More details about this are in the next section. If they do not have a club card, they can play any card except for a point card (that is, they cannot play a hearts card or the Queen of Spades). The person to their left must "follow suit" by playing any one of their club cards. The player who has the 2 of clubs must start by placing it face-up in the middle of the four players. The cards are shuffled, and the computer deals everyone a random set of 13 cards. The Queen of Spades is special in being worth 13 points, so you really want to avoid collecting it. The goal of the game is to win by collecting the fewest point cards. So you have the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace, in all four suits - spades, clubs, diamonds, and hearts. To start your game of Hearts, you need four players and a deck of 52 cards. The rules described on this page are the "Standard Rules" for playing the card game Hearts at World of Card Games. Rule 2: Cannot Lead Hearts Until Hearts Have Been Broken.Rule 1: No Point Cards on the First Trick.Rules of Hearts at World of Card Games by Holger World of Card Games Table of Contents If your team fails to make your contract, subtract 10 points for every trick you bid from your total score.Card Game Hearts - Rules, Strategy, Examples by Holger World of Card Games For every trick you won above the total in your contract, add 1 point to your total. At the end of a round, if you and your partner managed to win at least the number of tricks in your contract, multiply the number of tricks in your contract by 10 points. Keep playing like this until everyone is out of cards. The winner of the trick collects the 4 cards, then plays the next leading suit. If the leading suit isn’t spades, and one or more spades have been played, the player with the highest spade wins the trick instead. Once all 4 players have gone, the player with the highest card in the suit that led wins the trick. If you don’t have a card in that suit, you can play any card from your hand. After the first player leads, the rest of the players take turns playing a card in the same suit if they have one. However, players can’t lead with spades until a spade has been used to trump a leading suit. That player can play a card in any suit from their hand. Once both teams have a contract, the round starts with the player to the left of the dealer. Let each player announce how many tricks they think they’ll win, which is called their bid. Keep in mind that spades trump every suit, regardless of what suit leads. To win a trick, you need to have the highest card in the suit that leads. Then, take a look at your cards and estimate how many tricks you think you can win that round. Have the dealer deal 13 cards to each player. Whoever draws the highest card deals first. To start the game, each player draws a card. To score points, try to win the number of tricks that you and your teammate bid at the beginning of the round. The goal of the game is to be the team that reaches 500 points first. Spades is a strategic card game that’s played with two teams of two. ![]()
